MESSAGE-PATIENTS MESOTHELIOMA-LIVE LIFE KING SIZE

1.Its no doubt that life has been cruel to all those affected by Mesothelioma, but does that mean we stop living our life?

2.The answer is emphatic NO as life is God gifted and we must enjoy the life to its fullest extent.

3.Go out and enjoy as if their is no other day and at the last hour of the journey there should not be regret in life.

4.Now one thing which is certain is that you have been affected because of the disease and thus instead of cursing any body one must live each day to its fullest extent and revive other patients also with your personal example.

5.Remember The sinking of Titanic Ship and visualise the scene that when the whole mammoth ship was sinking and at that particular instance ship band players and pipers started playing the band so that the agony and pain of the people can be reduced as the death was certain.

6.The corollary to the above example is to be of use to the world and lets make it a better place to stay by one's own endeavour and at the end of the journey of this life one will feel much more satisfied than those who have been living a normal life as they have yet to understand the meaning of life.

STATISTICS-MESOTHELIOMA

1.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in Jul 2004 that 1,493 people died from asbestos in 2000, compared with 77 in 1968

2. Asbestos-related deaths have overtaken those of black-lung disease, reflecting in part the decline of the coal mining industry.

3. Asbestos usage increased substantially after World War II and peaked in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

ACTIONS TO BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE SMOOTH LIFE FOR MESOTHELIOMA PATIENT

1.Learn about the disease, effects and treatment oneself.

2.Learn from the doctor that how life of an affected person can be made comfortable.

3.Let the patient participate actively in treatment and decision-making and they will be able to live a better and active life.

4.Eat well, exercise regularly and get enough rest.

5.Stress management is a must with an active life.

6.Family support and love can help in dealing with the disease in a much pragmatic manner.

7.Maintain weight.

8.Plan nutritional diet with your doctor and have it religiously.

9.Join a spiritual and emotional group to help deal with situation.

10. Learn about pain management and what measures are required to take when pain strikes such as exercise, medication or therapy.

STRESS CAUSED TO PATIENT DUE TO MESOTHELIOMA DETECTION

1. Coping with mesothelioma is not easy as symptoms of mesothelioma do not appear during growth of the cancer as latency period of the disease can vary from 10 to 30 years.

2. The time when mesothelioma is detected can be very crucial for the patient suffering from it as patient may feel lonely, insecure and frightened.

3. Most people do not live beyond 18 months after detection of disease. They are all the more stressed due to their certain death and uncertainity about compensation and the life of family members after his demise.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE EXERCISED WHILE FILING LAW SUIT AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED WITH MESOTHELIOMA

1. It is your right to seek compensation if you have worked in asbestos related enviroment.

2. The monetary compensation may be used to pay medical bills and make up for lost income.

3. There are two types of mesothelioma lawsuits:

(a) Personal injury claim.

(b) Wrongful death lawsuit.

4. Personal injury claim involves patient filing a lawsuit for damages that may include medical expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering.

5. Wrongful death suit involves survivor of a mesothelioma fatality filing a claim.

6. Laws and procedures are different for each type of claim, and depend upon the jurisdiction where the case is filed.

7. IMPORTANT:You are likely to lose your legal right when you get ready to file a lawsuit if you do not take the following steps:
(a) In most states the summons and complaint should be filed within three years after you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

(b) Some other states allow only for one year statute of limitations. If you delay time, you lawsuit will not be accepted.

(c) If you have not filed the summons and complaint within three years after diagnosis with mesothelioma, you cannot file a lawsuit 30 or 40 years later when the disease begins to manifest itself.

(d) The complaint should be against the manufacturers of asbestos products who were aware of the dangers of asbestos and yet failed to warn the public or study their asbestos products.

(e) You should be aware of exactly where you were exposed to asbestos and during what period of time you were exposed.

(f) There should be evidence of your working in that location by mentioning co-workers and other friends who had known you working in that place.

(g) There should be detailed employment records.

(h) There should be detailed work history records.

(8) There should be detailed medical records. Medical records should include confirmatory tests for mesothelioma, the extent of damage, the prognosis, and the stage of the disease you are in. These tests should include: nature of symptoms that you contend are related to your asbestos related condition, the date you first experienced such symptom and the date of diagnosis, name of diagnosing physician, description of any pain, incapacity or inability to lead a normal life, as a result of your medical condition, biopsy or tissue sample test results, X-rays and CT Scans, etc.

(9) You must be ready for a EBT which means an examination before trial. An EBT is a process whereby a person with malignant mesothelioma is placed under oath and asked a series of questions concerning their background, work history, exposure to asbestos products and medical questions. The deposition can be made at home or in a hospital. Failing to make this will make you ineligible to fight for your legal rights. • You should not have accepted any money from anyone as settlement before the trial begins.

TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR MESOTHELIOMA

1. Treatment for mesothelioma depends on following factors:

(a) The location of the cancer.

(b) The stage of the disease.

(c) The patient's age and general health.

2. Standard treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Sometimes, these treatments are combined.

SURGERY

3. Surgery is a common treatment for mesothelioma. The doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue around it.

4. For cancer of the pleura (pleural mesothelioma), a lung may be removed in an operation called a Pneumonectomy.

5. Sometimes part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing, is also removed.

RADIATION THERAPY

6. Radiation therapy, also called Radiotherapy, involves the use of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours.

7. Radiation therapy affects the cancer cells only in the treated area. The radiation may come from a machine (external radiation) or from putting materials that produce radiation through thin plastic tubes into the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation therapy).

CHEMOTHERAPY

8. Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Most drugs used to treat mesothelioma are given by injection into a vein (intravenous, or IV).

9. Doctors are also studying the effectiveness of putting chemotherapy directly into the chest or abdomen (intracavitary chemotherapy).

10. To relieve symptoms and control pain, the doctor may use a needle or a thin tube to drain fluid that has built up in the chest or abdomen. The procedure for removing fluid from the chest is called Thoracentesis.

11. Removal of fluid from the abdomen is called Paracentesis. Drugs may be given through a tube in the chest to prevent more fluid from accumulating. Radiation therapy and surgery may also be helpful in relieving symptoms.

QUESTIONS TO BE ASKED TO YOUR DOCTOR ON YOUR FIRST VISIT ON SUSPICION OF MESOTHELIOMA OCCURENCE

1. Inform doctor that you have been exposed to asbestos and also inform him about the duration for which this asbestos exposure has taken place and ask undermentioned questions to doctor:

(a) What should I do?

(b) Can I be screened for mesothelioma?

(c) Are my family at risk of mesothelioma if I have been exposed to asbestos?

(d) What should they do?

2. What are you looking for?

3. Will the tests show whether I have cancer?

4. Will the tests show whether my cancer can be operated on?

5. Are any of the tests painful?

6. Do any of the tests have after effects?

7. Can I have these tests as an outpatient?

8. Will I have to stay in hospital for any of the tests?

9. Should I bring someone with me when I have the tests?

10. How long will the results take?

11. Who will give me the test results?

12. Can you explain what is mesothelioma?

13. How would I know if I am having mesothelioma?

14. What tests are you going to do?

15. What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

16. How do I break this news to my family?

17. What is time left for my survival?

18. I am affected with which kind of mesothelioma?

19. Has my cancer spread beyond the primary site?

20. What is the stage of my cancer and what does that mean to me?

21. What best treatment options are available for me?

22. What do you recommend and why?

23. What is the prognosis of my cancer?

24. What is the chance of my cancer recurring with these treatment plans?

25. What should I do to be ready for treatment?

STATISTICS MESOTHELIOMA

1. Approximately 2000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

2. Internationally, the incidence is approximately 9 cases per every 1 million persons.

3. Malignant mesothelioma has a peak incidence about 40 years after asbestos exposure, and it commonly develops when a person is between 50 and 70 years of age.

4. The average age of diagnosis is 50 to 70 years. The disease affects men 3 to 5 times more often than women.Study showed that 45% had a history of exposure to asbestos and 53% had occupational exposure to asbestos.

5. The average survival time is about 12-18 monthsMesothelioma has a long latency (inactive) period of 15-20 years.

6. Experts predict that mesothelioma diagnoses will continue to increase in the United States for at least another 10 to 20 years.

7. Deaths from Mesothelioma are 2,371 deaths in America 2001 (NCHS, 2003) • Deaths from Mesothelioma are 1848 deaths in the UK 2001(UK Government Statistics)

8. Over half a million asbestos and mesothelioma injury claims have been filed so far. Over 50000 were filed in 1998 alone.

9. Mesothelioma has no preference for race or gender, as asbestos exposure is thought to be the most important risk factor. Asbestos exposure is directly linked to at least 50% of the cases.

10. Incidence ( annual ) of Mesothelioma is 563 new cases in the UK 2002 (UK Government Statistics)

11. By the year 2030, it is estimated that asbestos will have caused 60000 instances of mesothelioma.

MESOTHELIOMA ATTORNEYS -SELECT WITH DILIGENCE

1. Its essential that when one decide to hire an attorney to fight against the injustice of contracting mesothelioma, it is necessary that one must hire a reliable attorney who knows what needs to be done.

2. It was stated in the Wall Street Journal that if a mesothelioma case goes to trial the average award in 2001 was $6 million.

3. Of course no one can guarantee that one will win but if one can prove that the cause of your mesothelioma was unsafe workplace procedures and practices then one have a better chance of winning.

4. Either way even if you lose one do not make any financial contribution to the cost of the legal proceedings.

SYMPTOMS PERITONEAL MESOTHELIOMA

1. Symptoms of peritoneal Mesothelioma are abdominal pain, swelling due to fluid build up in the abdomen, and weight loss.

2. Rare symptoms can be blood clotting abnormalities, bowel obstruction, fever, and anemia.

3. When this cancer spreads throughout the body, it causes trouble swallowing, pain, or swelling on the neck and face.

BENIGN MESOTHELIOMA

1. There is a form of non cancerous (benign) mesothelioma that can develop in the lining of the lungs, or in the lining of the reproductive organs.

2. It can occur in either men or women.

3. These non cancerous tumours are very rare.

4. Due to its much less occurence, not much diligence is being given here to the disease.

PERITONEAL MESOTHELIOMA

1. The tissue lining the abdomen is called as Peitoneum. It helps to protect the contents of abdomen. It produces a lubricating fluid which helps to move the organs smoothly inside the abdomen. The function of this membrane is to enclose abdominal organs.

2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is the second type of Mesothelioma which affects the peritoneum membrane.Mesothelioma of tisues lining the abdominal cavity is called as Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

3. However, peritoneal mesothelioma is rarely found as compared to pleural cancer. This is the reason why peritoneal mesothelioma is more invasive and results in a shorter life expectancy for a patient.

SYMPTOMS PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA

1. The most common early symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are:

(a) Blood in the sputum (fluid)

(b) A cough or a change in cough pattern

(c) Difficulty in swallowing

(d) Hoarseness

(e) Shortness of breath

(f) Pain in the chest or abdomen

(g) Weight loss.

2. However the exact symptoms for Pleural Mesotheliom causes accumulation of fluid in the pleura and thus causes shortness of breath and pain in the chest.

3. Rare symptoms can be blood clotting abnormalities, bowel obstruction, fever, and anemia.

4. When this cancer spreads throughout the body, it causes trouble swallowing, pain, or swelling on the neck and face.

PLEURAL MESOTHELIOMA

1. Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type of Mesothelioma cancer.

2. A thin membrane between the chest cavity and the lungs, known as the ‘Pleura’, is affected in this type of cancer and thus gets its name. The tissues lining (or covering) the lungs are called the pleura.3. There are two pleura and thus called as pleural membranes. The gap between them is called the pleural space. The pleura are fibrous sheets which help to protect the lungs. They produce a lubricating fluid that fills the gap between the two pleura. This helps the lungs to move smoothly in the chest when they are inflating and deflating as we breathe.

4. To sum it up we can say that the function of this membrane is to provide a lubricated and smooth surface between the chest and the lungs to allow smooth movement.
4. Pleural Mesothelioma is also commonly known as lung cancer. It can also affect the sheet of tissue covering the heart i.e pericardium.Pericardium protects the heart and allows it to move smoothly within the sac.

5. Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma do not occur for 30 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos. 6. Known exposure should be enough for one to see a physician regularly.

TYPES OF MESOTHELIOMA

1. The types of Mesothelioma is as listed below:

(a) Pleural Mesothelioma.

(b) Peitoneal Mesothelioma.

(c) Benign Mesothelioma.

WHAT IS MESOTHALIOMA?

1. Malignant Mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium). It is a cancer of mesothelial cells. These cells cover the outer surface of most of our internal body organs, forming a lining that is sometimes called the mesothelium. So this is where this type of cancer gets its name.It can develop in tissues covering lungs and abdomen.

2. Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. Others have been exposed to asbestos in a household environment, often without knowing it. An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later.

BE CAREFUL -ASBESTOS ITEMS LYING UNNOTICED NEAR YOU ARE SPREADING MESOTHELIOMA

1. If you are staying in any old building or working in old offices one may be at risk for asbestos exposure due to its presence which can be their in under mentioned items:

(a) Boilers and pipe covering.

(b) Insulating cement.

(c) Electrical wires and gaskets.

(d) Floor and ceiling tile.

(e) Roofing materials and fireproofing.

(f) Plastic cement and wallboard/millboard and asbestos cloth.

(g) Blankets and insulating block.

(h) Brake pads and linings.

CATEGORY OF PERSONNEL AT INCREASED RISK TO GET MESOTHELIOMA

1. Following are the categories of person at increased threat level for getting Mesothelioma due to contact with Asbestos related substance:

(a) Workers at a shipyard.

(b) Workers at an asbestos mine.

(c) Mill Producers of asbestos products.

(c) Workers in the heating and construction industries.

(d) Friends and family of the workers in the above listed fields.

ASBESTOS BILL REINTRODUCED

1. The Senate Health Committee’s employment and workplace safety subcommittee held a hearing in beginning of month of March in order to undertake testifying by widow of Bruce Vento.

2. Vento was a congressman who died several years ago from Mesothelioma.

3. Senator Patty Murray is continuing her crusade to ban asbestos, and reintroduced her bill to ban the material.

4. Senator Patty Murray has tried to get this bill passed before, but it always died.

5. This time,Senator Patty Murray has committee chair Barbara Boxer as a co-sponsor, and reportedly has the support of majority leader Harry Reid, so prospects look better.

ASBESTOS SUIT RESULTS IN COMPENSATION OF $2 MILLION

1. A jury has ordered General Motors to pay $2 million to a retired mechanic who was exposed to asbestos through his work and developed serious asbestos-related illnesses as a result.

2. The plaintiff, Roland Leo Grenier, Sr., represented by attorneys Scott R. Frieling and Rick Nemeroff, filed the lawsuit in New Castle County Superior Court against General Motors, Ford Motor Co., and several other manufacturers.

3. A steelworker from Minnesota has filed an asbestos lawsuit against 100 defendant companies claiming that he was repeatedly exposed to asbestos for long periods of time in the course of his work, which led him to develop mesothelioma.

4. Edwin Brekke claims that during his work as a steelworker, boiler operator, and labourer at various locations between 1938 and 1982, he was exposed to, inhaled, or otherwise absorbed dangerous asbestos fibers that emanated from products and materials he worked with and around.

ERIONITE-ANOTHER MINERAL CULPRIT FOR CAUSING MESOTHELIOMA

1. Though mesothelioma is almost always associated with asbestos, a study found that another mineral, Erionite called as Erionite, is even more dangerous. Erionite is even more naturally fibrous than asbestos. It is a naturally occurring, but rare volcanic mineral that often has sections that look and feel like wool.

2. The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found a large number of cases of Mesothelioma in two villages in Turkey where Erionite is very common in nature, and commonly used in the construction of housing and storage rooms.

3. The researchers followed around 891 people from these two villages who were 20 years old or older for 23 years. They found that during those 23 years, 372 deaths occurred in the two neighboring villages. Of these deaths, 119 were from Mesothelioma. That means that nearly half (44.5%) of all deaths in these villages were due to exposure to Erionite.

4. Researchers have come to conclusion that those who experience long-term exposure to erionite are at an exceptionally high risk of developing Mesothelioma.

5. There is no known cases of Mesothelioma from erionite in the United States.

CATEGORIES FOR WHOM COMPENSATION CLAIMS HAVE BEEN WON BY LAWYERS/ATTORNEYS IN MESOTHELIOMA SETTLEMENTS

1. Solicitors advise on and conduct compensation claims in respect of illness arising from numerous diseases linked with asbestos like asbestosis, mesothelioma, pneumoconiosis, pleural thickening and pleural plaques. Prefer solicitors with membership of the specialist Law Society Personal Injury Panel and let them conduct claims for you.

2. Solicitors have conducted successful claims for compensation for Asbestosis and Mesothelioma conditions suffered from exposure to airborne asbestos fibres.

PRECAUTIONS WHILE SELECTING LAWYERS/ ATTORNEYS FOR MESOTHELIOMA SETTLEMENT CASES.

1. Those who have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma are allowed to file a lawsuit. Lots of companies who were accountable for exposing their employees to asbestos were well aware of the hazards and results, but still let their workers carry on with little or no defence. Now, decades later, the effects of this contact is becoming prominent on the workers post their retirement.

2. Those looking for asbestos attorney should hunt around for someone who has confirmed experience in the field. The lawyer may not disclose name of people and complex details about the person for whom they have fought the case, as that would tantamount to be a breach of confidentiality. On the other hand, they can grant one with particulars on how rapidly cases were set on, how much compensation were effectively obtained, and how many mesothelioma lawsuits they have dealt with.

3. It is vital that one locate a good, experienced asbestos attorney as quickly as possible, after one has been diagnosed with an asbestos linked disease like Mesothelioma. The majority states have a set time limit in which one can file his lawsuit.

4. Asbestos Lawyers are capable of accumulating million in compensation for victims and their families and thus the importance of searching a correct and a reliable Lawyer.

5. Removal of asbestos from numerous buildings/materials has led to filing a number of cases against these companies who used asbestos without disclosing the content, against owners of buildings and producers of the insulating asbestos and has led to declaration of bankruptcy by many companies.

DIAGNOSIS-ASBESTOS RELATED DISEASE

1. It was in 1924 that the first diagnosis of asbestos triggered illness was made. A woman who was working with asbestos since the age of 13 died at the age of 33. An English doctor who determined the cause of her death named it asbestosis. With this discovery, a research was carried out on asbestos and 25% of people working in asbestos mines in England were found afflicted with asbestos related lungs disease.

2. It was in 1931 that laws were passed to increase ventilation and make asbestosis an excusable work related disease.

3. Further It was in 1962 that a Dr Mc Nulty made another diagnosis of the asbestos related to disease which can cause severe disfigurement and impairment of the lungs. People suffering from the fatal disease suffer from breathing problems, abnormal blood clotting, abdominal pain, significant, weight loss and high fever.

4. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has devised rules and regulations to help mine and shipyard workers from transitory exposures to asbestos and help win the race against this disease.

5. Mine workers working in hazardous asbestos environments are urged to wear protective clot help avoid inflicting their loved ones with cancerous effects of asbestos fibers. OSHA urges exposed workers to bathe daily to remove any traces of the cancerous silicate like fiber.

6. Regular check ups are important as a physician may be able to diagnose the disease at an early stage.

7. The asbestos related cancer of Mesothelioma usually takes its toll on the individual after 20 to 30 yrs. During this time the individual may become the victim of serious cough breathing problems.

ASBESTOS-HISTORY

1. The history of asbestos dates back to 3000 years and traces of asbestos have been found in pottery and insulation in remote areas of Finland. Egyptians used it in the wicks of eternal flames of the vestal virgins, as funeral dresses for the cremation of kings, and as napkins, burial clothes and table mats.Egyptians also used asbestos in clothes for improving its durability.

2. Romans also used it in cremation and lamp wicks due to its heat and fire resistant qualities. It began to be used in insulating armour for soldiers and warriors. In ancient times items made of asbestos were held to be at par with items made of gold. It was generally used to wrap bodies when bodies were burnt after death to keep the ashes of the body separate from the woods and other burning materials.

3. It gained popularity in the 17th century with the industrial revolution and started to be used as insulation in turbines, boilers, kilns and other high temperature products. The first ever asbestos mine was opened in 1879 at Thetford in Canada. It became a major component in insulation for boilers, fireboxes and pipes in steam locomotives. Construction materials contained asbestos to include insulation, floor and ceiling tiles, siding and cement pipes. The use of asbestos increased greatly during World War II. It was used in ships in pipe fitting, insulators and other parts. Almost 4.3 million people who worked in shipyards were exposed to the risk of asbestos related illness.

REMOVAL ASBESTOS -PRECAUTIONS

1. Asbestos removal should only be performed by qualified professionals, since the risks associate with an improperly conducted asbestos removal are quite high.
2. Asbestos removal experts can conduct an investigation, taking samples of various materials to determine whether asbestos removal is required.
3. These can be as satisfactory and much less expensive than asbestos removal. There are stringent requirements set by federal, state, and local authorities regarding the methods for asbestos removal and disposal. Further information is available through organizations such as the EPA and OSHA.
4. If an asbestos removal is occurring on a property that you rent, you can ask if the asbestos removal professionals have the proper training and qualifications. It is illegal to conduct an asbestos removal if you are anyone other than the property owner or a qualified asbestos removal specialist.

ASBESTOS-THE CULPRIT FOR MESOTHELIOMA CANCER

1. The word “asbestos” is derived from Greek which means inextinguishable or indestructible. Greek ‘a’ means "not" while “sbestos” stands for "extinguishable", hence the term “asbestos”.Asbestos is a fibrous metamorphic mineral of hydrous magnesium silicate variety and is extracted from mines of metamorphic rocks.
2. Chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, acctinolite and anthophyllite are types of asbestos.Asbestos fibers are odorless and tasteless
3. It is resistant to fire or heat.It is used in brake shoes, gaskets for its heat resistance properties. In past it was used in electric oven and hotplate wiring for its electrical insulation properties. There are over 3,000 manufactured products that are known to contain asbestos
It is mixed with cement or woven into fabric or mats.
4. Fibers being small and light stay in air for a long time and thus its small size allows them to travel deeply into respiratory and get settled within smallest spaces of the lungs. These fibers by their structure break into smaller and smaller pieces and when inhaled sticks to mucus inside air passages. These fibers directly injure mesothelium cells of pleura and eventually cause mesothelioma cancer. Excessive exposure to asbestos causes asbestosis, mesothelioma and asbestos related lung cancer.
5. As a result the usage of asbestos banned in a number of countries.
6. Asbestos exposure occurs at working place to include workers working in asbestos mines, shipping industry, renovating building with asbestos in them, install break shoes, manufacture fire retardant cloth and clothing or use construction materials that include asbestos.
7. Family members of persons handling asbestos are at risk as these asbestos particles being of small size stick to the clothes of persons working in asbestos related environment and thus get transmitted to other persons.

PREAMBLE BLOG

1. I being an Oncologist and having done my stint in states it became imperative on my part to bring all the information on Mesothelioma under one umbrella as I have seen people struggling from the disease.
2. It is my endeavour to provide all the information to the user at a single platform to ensure that no individual suffers due to lack of information on the said subject.
3. I hope my effort will go a long way and is a way to pay tribute to my Alma mater.
